Markdown for Agents: Check What Your Website Says

See what Cloudflare Markdown for Agents changes, inspect the facts that survive conversion, and decide whether the feature has a useful job on your site.

Contents

Cloudflare can serve a Markdown copy of a web page to an AI tool that requests it. A cleaner copy can be easier for those tools to read, as long as it keeps the details your customers rely on.

Consider a service page with a price and a condition explaining who qualifies for it. If the shorter version keeps the price and loses the condition, the conversion has changed what the business appears to offer.

As an owner, you want to know whether the version an assistant receives still says what you meant. You can review that without becoming a developer, and the check can turn up problems on the normal page too.

What changes when a page becomes Markdown

HTML is the format behind ordinary web pages. It contains the text alongside instructions for layout and interactive behavior. Markdown is a simpler text format that can represent headings, lists and links with fewer surrounding instructions.

Cloudflare introduced Markdown for Agents on February 12, 2026. When enabled, it can convert the original HTML for a visitor that asks for Markdown. Your normal website continues serving its regular pages to people.

This can make a document easier for a tool to process, especially when much of the original page consists of layout instructions. Your service area, prices and conditions still come from what you publish, so the conversion carries over whatever the page already says.

A tool reading the page’s HTML can see something different from a person whose browser runs the page. Some pages load important information after the initial response. So text that loads later can be missing from the converted copy.

We would inspect the result on a few representative pages before enabling conversion broadly, because a long article and a booking page can convert very differently.

Choose three pages that reveal different problems

Start with your main service page, an article that includes a table and a page containing an important restriction. If your site has no articles, use a second service page with a different layout.

Ask whoever manages the website to supply the original page address and the converted text for each one. They should request the Markdown version explicitly and record whether the response arrived in that format. Saving the output as a document makes it easier to review together.

CloudWeld’s Read as AI tool provides another way to inspect a public page’s readable content. Use it as a second view to compare against, since each assistant and Cloudflare’s conversion can read a page a little differently.

Read each copy on its own first. If you need to keep looking at the original page to understand a paragraph, make a note of what is missing. Then place both versions beside each other and work through the details that would affect a customer’s decision.

Review meaning before reviewing size

Consider a hypothetical service page with this sentence:

Initial consultations are available online. On-site inspections are available only within our listed service area and require a separate appointment.

On the visual page, the second sentence might sit in a small box below the main offer. If the converted copy loses that box, the remaining sentence can make the service sound more widely available than it is.

The fix can be as small as moving that sentence out of the box and into the main description.

Use this review table with your own pages:

Detail to inspect What a usable copy should preserve A reason to investigate
Business identity The name and context make clear who provides the service A partner’s name appears as the provider
Eligibility The reader can tell who the service is for A restriction disappears into missing visual content
Price conditions The amount stays attached to what it includes A starting price reads like a fixed total
Service area Places served and important boundaries remain clear A footer location is mistaken for the entire coverage area
Comparison table Each value can still be connected to its heading Values appear as an unexplained sequence
Next step The correct inquiry or booking link survives The text says to click a button that no longer exists

You can add a row for anything that causes expensive misunderstandings in your business. For a training provider that could be a prerequisite; for a service firm it might be the difference between an assessment and the work that follows.

Check that each condition still sits next to the price it belongs to, because a condition several paragraphs away is easy to misread.

Check the current product settings

Cloudflare’s current documentation lists availability for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, along with SSL for SaaS customers. It describes HTML conversion with a 2 MB response limit and explains how to enable it for selected paths.

The same documentation describes a Content-Signal header, which communicates preferences about reuse. Cloudflare preserves an existing origin value and supplies permissive defaults when it is absent. Whoever enables the feature should review that setting with your existing content policy.

You can ask for it in one sentence: “Show us which pages will change, the settings you will apply and one example of the result before and after.” Include the plan requirement in that discussion so you agree to any subscription change before the feature is switched on.

For a site with mixed content, a limited rollout can make review easier. You might begin with public educational pages while investigating more complicated account or booking pages separately. Keep normal customer testing in place after the change.

What a shorter document changes

The launch announcement demonstrates reduced text processing on an example page. That is a fact about the document, and your inquiries and answer checks are where you learn whether buyers found you.

Google’s current search guidance says Google Search reads your normal pages, so Markdown copies and special AI text files make no difference to how you rank there.

Other tools may choose to request Markdown, and a good version can serve those tools well. To see whether it helps the business, note the date you switched it on and watch your inquiries over the following weeks, as you would with any website change.

The guide to Cloudflare’s readiness score explains how to keep a technical finding separate from search performance. A higher score may confirm that the requested format is available, and your content and your competitors still decide whether buyers choose you.

Keep one set of facts accurate

Once conversion is working, put it into the ordinary content review. When a service changes, update the published page and check that its readable copy carries the new information correctly.

Repeat the comparison when a layout changes, a new page type appears or someone changes how important conditions are displayed, and skip it for small text fixes.

Save the examples you approved. They give the person maintaining the site a concrete reference, and they settle a later disagreement faster than a vague request to make the content more AI-friendly.

If the original page already reads clearly and AI tools are not asking for Markdown yet, you can wait on the feature. If the copy is missing information, fix the page first. Once the copy matches the page and your logs show AI tools asking for it, keep it on and add it to your regular content review.
